Shop Life #004: No Oil Leaks

The customer walked into Wabbit’s Garage carrying his keys in one hand and a flattened piece of cardboard in the other.

“I don’t have an oil leak,” he announced.

Wabbit looked at the cardboard. Several dark stains covered the center, including one that was still wet.

“Okay,” Wabbit said, taking a sip from his coffee.

“It just leaves a few spots sometimes.”

“On the cardboard?”

“And the driveway.”

Wabbit set his mug beside the overflowing job clipboard and took the keys.

The old European sedan looked reasonably clean from above. The oil level was low, but still on the dipstick. Nothing was pouring onto the floor, and there wasn’t a cloud of smoke following it into the shop.

For a moment, the customer’s diagnosis seemed almost believable.

Then Wabbit rolled underneath it.

The bottom of the engine was coated in a thin layer of oil and road grime. A few fresh drops had collected near the back of the engine, while older stains showed that this wasn’t exactly a recent development.

The customer leaned down beside the car.

“See? It isn’t leaking now.”

A drop of oil landed on Wabbit’s glove.

Wabbit stared at it.

Another drop formed above him.

“It’s probably just leftover from the last oil change,” the customer added.

Wabbit wiped the area clean with a red shop rag, checked the usual suspects, and topped off the oil. There wasn’t enough of an active leak to condemn a specific part yet, but there was definitely enough evidence to justify keeping an eye on it.

He rolled back out from underneath the car.

“So, what’s the verdict?” the customer asked.

Wabbit picked up the repair order and wrote:

COMPLAINT: Oil leak.
DIAGNOSIS: Vehicle marking its territory.
RECOMMENDATION: Check oil. Add as needed.
STATUS: Monitoring.

The customer read it twice.

“I told you it wasn’t leaking.”

Wabbit looked at the fresh drop forming beneath the car.

“You’re right,” he said. “It’s just sweating.”

The drop hit the floor.

“Marking its territory.”

The customer nodded, apparently satisfied with the explanation.

Wabbit took another sip of coffee and slid the cardboard back under the engine.

Just another day at Wabbit’s Garage.
